    Q&A with Linda
    QUESTION
My problem isn't loading my horse it is unloading him. He jumps right in and totally relaxes, until you ask him to back out. Then he refuses. He stiffens and stands as still as a mule. He won't move and he actually goes to sleep on you. He will walk out forward but he won't back out. I tried to get him to load one foot at a time but he very quickly puts all four feet in. He could stand in the trailer all day long. He loves it in the trailer. He just doesn't want to come out. He becomes afraid when he steps out with his back foot and he jumps right back up in. This is when he decided that if he just didn't move and went to sleep he could stand there all day. Could you help me? What do I need to do? -Bob

    ANSWER

The fact that you can't just get him to put one foot in at a time, and then two, and go back and forward easily is the problem. You have to get this understood and under control and then you will solve the problem. Your horse is afraid of backing out so it sounds like he's not confident in Zone 4 and 5. You can simulate this with backing him through gates, between logs or poles, over logs... and start by having him come towards you a step or two and then back to where he started rather than trying to back him in from the get go. In this way you will build confidence and have more control of his forwards-backwards motion... which is a Yo-Yo Game. Once you can do this in simulation you can then go on to the trailer. Once at the trailer, do not load him. See if you can get him to stand next to it with Zone 3, Zone 4, Zone 5. Maneuver him sideways around it... anything BUT load him. And then have him step in and out with just his front feet but don't load him for several days, just keep practicing with the front feet until it is foolproof and backing is easy. Then start with the hind feet, and once that's good, load him all the way and back him out several times before leaving him in there. (Check out the next Savvy Times issue for a great article on trailer loading and a new simulator)

     awaits YOUR arrival...

UK Manager, Laura Aitken and Sally Brett, Level 3 and a dedicated volunteer, invite YOU to join us at Stoneleigh Park, learn more about Horsenality, 7 Games, and riding with Fluidity. Your relationship with your horse will be transformed! If your dream is to enjoy this summer, hacking out along the gorgeous country lanes feeling competent and safe, or competing at a local event and enjoying the process, then time spent in our purpose built environment (wait until you see our playground, with honeycomb, toys etc) under the guidance of Parelli Faculty, will enable YOU to Live Your Dream. So if you have been cautiously sitting on the fence, be brave and act now! We have a few spots left in Natural Attraction (fun with no strings attached), Calm Ride & Ride Out (naturally, all these courses begin with your horse/human relationship on the ground), plus Leads & Lead Changes and Natural Collection (learn more about where you are going). Call to secure your place and talk to us to learn what material to study at home to set yourself up for success! Phone 0800 0234813

     Open House

Atwood Open House was a wonderful success this past weekend. The Atwood and Parelli Teams combined their skills and talents to showcase the future of the Parelli-Atwood Preschool Program. Pat and Kalley Krickeberg presented the step by step process of developing a young horse and demonstrated the results of a strong foundation on young horses. The sun shone all day as nearly 400 Parelli students and local community members come to support, investigate and learn about what Parelli and Atwood have been developing. Thank you to Tom Atwood, Mike and Catherine Sapienza, Kalley Krickeberg, and the whole Atwood team for your hospitality over the weekend!
