It was a beautiful, sunny, New England fall day. We started our ride out of one member's home and rode through a gravel pit to a lookout point, where we lined up all the horses for a group photo. We then continued down the trail, looking for pumpkins all the way to another member's house where we had hot beef stew and clam chowder waiting. After everyone had soup and signed up for the door prizes we rode back to the starting point on scenic, back dirt roads. After everyone unsaddled and cooled their horses down we all had a dish of delicious apple crisp.

The highlights for me on this ride was seeing all the savvy. Members having no problem with getting off their horses to walk them over the bridges with raging water rushing under them from the day before's heavy rain storm. Members getting back on their horses with savvy, using rocks and having their horse sidepass to them for them to get on. The best was when I was at the end of a group of ten horses and a car was approaching us from behind. Someone would yell "Car!" and everyone in the group moved their horse to the side of the road and rode single file until the car passed. It was like it had been rehearsed, each horse getting along and understanding what was being asked of them. Just beautiful to see.

Thank you Pat and Linda for all that you do for us. —Sandy Hodskins, New Hampshire, USA

Congratulations KY Mounted Police!
This event was held in Harrisburg, PA., Sept 2009. 100 horses and approximately 30 police departments competed in this event. Lexington, KY Mounted Police Department horses and unit members are trained using Parelli methods and techniques, and all first place trophies were awarded to our Unit. This is the first time in the history of the competition that this has happened, as well as the first time that one officer has won 1st place in both the Equitation and Obstacle Class. Without a doubt, this would not have been possible without studying under the Parelli program.

Question:
I'm currently searching for my next equine partner to go through Levels 1 and 2 with me. I tried for over a year to bond and develop a mutually respectful partnership with a young thoroughbred unsuccessfully. I'm being very picky about my next horse. I'm looking at Quarter horses and am finding a wide array of sizes, temperaments and attitude. In your view, is there a way to assess a horse's trainability, or suitability for playing the games and then going way beyond to develop into the finesse of riding naturally? How can I tell whether a horse will be a good match for me? In my area, I'm finding very few people willing to let me take a horse on trial. So how do I get the best picture before buying one?

Answer:
The Seven Games are a great way to check out a horse to buy. When you look at a horse, try to assess this way:

1. Decide what Horsenality you want that would suit your personality, skill level and goals.

2. Are you attracted to the horse on sight and is he built to meet your goals? (For example, you wouldn't buy a gaited horse if you wanted to jump a lot!)

3. How would you judge his spirit - low, medium, high? (Low and medium are the easiest to get on with!)

4. Is he easy going or nervous, flighty, and excitable?

5. Is his age and experience compatible with your needs: For example, a green or inexperienced rider would do much better with an older, more experienced horse. A more advanced rider, brave, etc. would be better equipped to get on with a young, inexperienced or more spirited horse.

6. In playing first three games (especially, because sometimes people won't let you play all seven or they think you are doing strange things to their horse!), are the responses favorable and if not? How long did it take to work? Tolerate only a very short time for favorable responses unless you are wanting to take on a difficult horse! Was he defensive and quick to get on adrenaline or more curious/compliant/indifferent about what you were doing?

7. If you know the impulsion scale (Calm Ride DVD) it would be good to assess where he is on that (Circling Game and riding usually will tell you). The ideal would be to find a "5." This means that he wants to go and wants to slow!

8. Does he have a well shaped back - a nice wither, not too sharp and not too flat (hard to keep a saddle on!)

9. Is he sound, will he pass a vet check? Don't buy a horse that has physical problems. It's heartbreaking when you've invested a lot of time, emotion and energy to have the horse go unsound. It would be good to watch someone ride him, and that going well, you should ride him. Sometimes horses are very rough gaited and you only know that by riding.

It's all about LOVE, LANGUAGE & LEADERSHIP in equal doses. That way you will never force a horse against his will... you'll cause your idea to become his idea. That's the Parelli way.

An Aussie Carousel - Week Four of courses at

Next Instructor Course Dates Released
As a result of our first 1-Star Instructor Course in Colorado this summer, there are almost 60 new 1-Star Instructors and Instructor trainees out in the world, helping us to spread the Parelli message. Dates of the next opportunity to learn about teaching Parelli directly from Pat and Linda in an intense 5-day experience have now been released. We look forward to seeing our next class of future Parelli Professionals in Florida from January 7th to the 11th, 2010. Click here for more details.

"This summer I had the incredible opportunity to realize a dream I never thought attainable. In August of 2009 I qualified for, and participated in, the first Parelli 1-Star Instructor Course in Pagosa Springs. Along with about 40 other dedicated students, we spent a week divided between "Pat's World" at the ranch every morning, and the classroom at the Corporate center every day. We 1-Star Trainees had the privilege of getting to observe Pat, his proteges, his interns and externs at work every morning, showing the level of excellence we might someday hope to achieve. We spent the afternoons in the classroom listening to Pat and Linda share their views for the future of Parelli and their hopes for us as new instructors. Before this new program was developed, the possibility of becoming a Parelli Professional was never even something I considered because, until now, anyone who was interested in becoming an instructor had to invest much more time with Pat, which unfortunately, I was never able to do. Two weeks, four weeks, even six weeks might be do-able, but a minimum of 3 months? Impossible with family and work commitments. This new program has enabled me to bring Parelli to new students in New Jersey for the first time, and I am loving it! This is the most rewarding thing I have done, and helping people start to improve their relationships with their horses is absolutely wonderful. I can only imagine where I can take my life from here with lots of "perspiration" and the inspiration that Pat and Linda continue to give us all!"
—Jeane DeVries, 1-Star Parelli Professional

A TESTAMENT TO GOOD BREEDING & A SOLID FOUNDATION
Atwood Ranch Naturally special promotion -- 20% off select yearlings during the month of November. Listen to what several happy horse owners are saying about their Atwood Ranch horses. Check out more testimonials here.

"All horses are smart but some are smarter than others. Those from bloodlines that produce intelligent, quick learning horses are set up for success. Playing with smart horses means a good return for time invested." - Don Halladay, 3-Star Instructor, Canada, owner of AR Bullettes Badger

"He is very cooperative and learns quickly. First time out I put him in a pond up to his shoulders with no problem. He goes in a single trailer with no problem. He puts two or four feet on a pedestal with no problem. Jumps two foot logs with no problem. I could go on and on but it would be braggin'!" - Jack Parelli, Pat's father, owner of AR Ill Be Convinced

"He has elevation in his gait, a presence that is extraordinary, and the movements of a bridle horse. He is everything I hoped for." - David Ellis, 5-Star Instructor, CA, owner of AR Colonel Safari

"Dyna is a super special horse, and a very special partner for me. I was amazed at how fast she picked things up, and the amount of confidence she showed. Dyna will be like a Cadillac for me. The students here love everything about her - her charismatic disposition, athletic ability, and her great looks." - John Baar, Parelli Faculty Leader, owner of AR Smart Little Dyna

Saddle Clinics are far more than Makeovers
When you come to a Parelli saddle seminar (with or without your own horse), you can expect to participate and learn on many levels. These events are not just about saddles and how to shim and fit them. You'll learn about horse postures as well as your own body carriage, biomechanics, fluidity and how to apply these things to use your horse's true potential. Many Parelli Professionals incorporate much of this valuable information within their own clinics, but it's a huge subject, and we receive regular requests for 2-day sessions that offer auditors as well as "makeover" candidates the chance to take the time it takes to absorb more and achieve higher levels in their Freestyle and Finesse riding.

Tina Giordano, 3-Star Parelli Professional, is a highly skilled presenter of this material. This photo composite illustrates just a few of the segments of a typical seminar held at Atwood Ranch:
1. It's easy to feel subtle or dramatic differences (the good and the bad) in what the horse feels as you move small and large parts of yourself when you're up there.

2. It's easy to see why a saddle could feel like a torture device when you measure the underside of it with a flexicurve and compare it to the measurement of the horse's back.

3. If your riding posture is not secure on your balance point, it's easy to be pulled off balance. Just a little tug on the "reins," and every one of these "riders" fell forward.

4. When you are secure on your balance point, even a huge tug, a sudden stop, zig or zag is not likely to unseat you!

5. It's important to know how to feel underneath a saddled horse and know what to expect as a good fit.

6. It's important to know what to look for when a horse is traveling on the forehand when ridden, understand all the consequences of this, and know how to fix it!

If you are interested in participating in such a clinic or would like to host one in your area please let us know. WE CAN SERVE YOU IN YOUR LANGUAGE: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish. Please email ParelliSaddles@ParelliSaddles.com. We will send you more information as it unfolds.

"Today I participated in the Saddle and Posture Clinic at Horse First in Wisconsin with Parelli Professionals Farrah Green and Michelle Manshardt. I am an Equine Sports Massage Therapist and have studied much of the material they have presented, but they blew me away with the in-depth content, at the same time the simplification that anyone could understand. The connections to human anatomy and how we effect our horses. How our horses are not "wrong"... just understand where they are "at" in their development and know what can we do to make a change. Thank you for the program of loaning out the saddles to try. I was very impressed with Farrah's knowledge of shimming and how current she was on the latest subtleties of how to fit saddles for optimum performance. I had just read about those in the Savvy Times not too long ago."
